This is the fifth post in a series of yoga sequences for the chakras.
The throat chakra, Vishuddha, is about communication, expressing your authentic voice and speaking your truth. This energetic abode is the intersection between our interior life and how we express or project our truth to the outside world. Vishuddha represents clarity of communication and integrity of speech.
Location: The throat chakra, Vishuddha is the fifth chakra and is located at the base of the throat, in the sushumna nadi.
Element: Its element is ether. The corresponding endocrine gland is the thyroid.
Colour: Its colour is blue and its mantra is HAM.
Unbalanced Throat chakra
An unbalanced Vishuddha can result in:
- untruthfulness, deceit, lying
- inadequate communication
- blocked creative expression
- speaking too bluntly
- shyness, fear of speaking
- not speaking your truth, unable to voice your thoughts
- being verbally very critical of others
- being misinterpreted or misunderstood by others
Balanced Throat chakra
A balanced Vishuddha can result in:
- speaking the truth
- expressing yourself authentically and clearly
- being listened to as an authoritative voice
- inspirational and creative communication
- hearing what has not been said
- offering sound advice to others
- not being afraid of asking for what you want in life
Affirmations to balance this chakra could be
- I speak from the heart
- I express myself honestly and authentically
- I deserve to be heard
- I speak up for myself
- I voice my opinions and thoughts freely and with confidence
- I use my voice kindly and thoughtfully
- I communicate clearly, effectively and with ease

Essential oils to balance the throat chakra
Sandalwood, neroli, ylang ylang, jasmin, sage, cypress, geranium and frankincence to support opening the channels of the throat chakra.
Meditation for your throat chakra
This meditation is called Bramahri and you hum like a bee! It calms the mind, it cleanses, opens and heals the throat chakra. It also creates a pleasant and healing vibration in the body and promotes blood flow to the brain.
Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position (or on a chair) with your spine straight. Place your palms on your knees.
Close your eyes and start turning your attention inwards.
Take a few deep breaths in and out through the nose to centre yourself and to calm the mind.
Bring your awareness to the breath, to its natural rhythm.
Keep the eyes closed and bring the index fingers on the cartilage of the ear (between the cheek and inner ear).
Take a deep breath in and as you breathe out, press very gently on the cartilage while making a loud humming sound like a bee.
Repeat until you feel a vibration building up in your throat and skull. Eventually, you will feel the vibration in your whole body.
Release your hands to your knees, maintain the eyes closed a little longer and notice the effects of this breathing practice on your physical, mental and emotional body.
